CareNotes

This paper might provide a good idea of how I work. At Interactive Care I was brought on as the sole UX resource in the effort of developing this venture company’s very first product.

Gathering Data

I started at ground zero for UX research. I had to develop a data sub-structure on which to build foundational artifacts like job maps, user journeys, and personas. I started with qualitative data gathering - contextual inquiries and interviews.

What I did well: Capturing and organizing data

What I could have done better: Distilling and sharing data

Synthesizing & Validating foundational artifacts

I employed Strategyn’s spin on Jobs-to-be-done to draft Home Health Nurses’ job and metrics for success as they pertained to collaboration and communication.

Having been on ride-alongs with several Nurses I was able to form key personas like Nurse Nancy and Patty Patient.

I also developed Core functional job maps for most of the players in the Home Health space, again using Strategyn’s structure for Jobs-to-be-done.

I used qualtrics surveys deployed directly to known HH Agencies. I also deployed surveys through Home Health associations’ newsletters and email campaigns. These surveys were targeted at testing the validity of my job maps and assumed priorities. See a copy of one of the survey question lists HERE.

What I did well: Got actionable data for users’ task and process needs

What I could have done better: Didn’t get good data for users’ emotional and self-actualization needs

Generating & Testing concepts

These foundational artifacts prepared me to lead ideation and solutioning studios. I engaged salespeople, subject-matter-experts, and executive leadership to digest the research and conceptualize using a business model canvas

To help this process I conducted card sorting exercises with pilot partner home health agencies.

The choice was made to develop a solution whose first iteration would facilitate communication among clinicians within a given agency - replacing emails, text, calls, etc with a HIPAA compliant, encrypted solution.

What I did well: Eliciting cross-functional engagement, input, and feedback

What I could have done better: Documenting strategic decisions for posterity

Wireframing & Prototyping solutions

I started with grayscale wireframes and tested them with two dozen nurses using …

  • Paper prototypes
  • Moderated Adobe XD prototypes
  • Unmoderated tests on www.usertesting.com

What I did well: Very thorough testing and iteration

What I could have done better: I wish I had done video recordings of my in-person tests

High-fidelity Designs & Prototypes

With well-tested designs and clear metrics for success I assembled high-fidelity prototypes using existing branding guidelines for general color and style choices.

What I did well: Generating an attractive UI that required minimal framework customization

What I could have done better: Built out a basic design system first

Dev Collaboration

InteractiveCare had not developed a Design System yet, so I had to work with developers using a Material library on Angular to achieve our desired front-end solution. In some cases I developed HTML/CSS prototypes to assist developers in achieving 100% fidelity to design.

What I did well: Clearly communicated design needs to developers

What I could have done better: In this case, I think recordings of prototype interactions would have helped developers.
